Knocking on the Tenth Door
Knocking on the Tenth Door Laurance Johnston
Periodically, I have vividly powerful, sometimes lucid, spiritual dreams. I speculate on what makes them a seemingly transcendent expression of the divine and as a scientist, what physiological mechanisms may mediate this process. In some dreams, the perceptions have been awe-inspiring. For example, I’ve experienced incredible sound, light, taste, and even smell while dreaming. Especially astonishing is the bliss-inducing music I’ve heard that reverberates through my soul. The more transcendent the dream, the more difficult it is to describe, perhaps reflecting author Aldous Huxley’s statement: “[T]hat which comes the nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.”
