Dear Stacey,
I have H1N1 virus and am very scared. I know it is contagious, and I am wondering why I got it and if everyone I come in contact with is susceptible to it. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks much.

Most people are afraid of H1N1, just like people were afraid of tuberculosis many years ago. You can think of these as infections du jour. Doctors eventually find a cure or vaccine, and then the epidemic dies down. It is all pretty much the same thing. A virus spreads, and people who have weakened immune systems are always the most susceptible. We constantly have viruses in our bodies that are not activated, and usually they do not affect us. When we are stressed out is when they come to life, so to speak.
